The Role of a Writing Coach

The Responsibility of a Writing Coach
A writing coach is a professional mentor who directly supports writers to enhance their abilities and develop a book that engages readers' interest. A writing coach refines the technical aspects of one's work and can assist in mastering the basic fundamental principles of writing, that when appropriately developed and used, make the writing process significantly more efficient. For some authors, even achieving completion of their first draft can seem challenging without access to the guidance of an experienced writing coach.

Writers generally struggle for these reasons:
  • Failing to start: 'I don't know how to start'
  • Clarity around the subject: 'I don't know what topic to write about'
  • Lack of confidence: 'I've never written a book before & I don't know if I can'
  • Lack of accountability: 'I've tried many times to write a book but I lose momentum.'
In summary, writing coaches offer an alternative to the traditional academic approach to becoming a writer. They provide an apprenticeship in creative writing where you create something while learning new skills from a seasoned professional outside the classroom. The writing coach develops ideas, creates outlines, sets goals, provides honest feedback, lists resources and provides motivation and guidance. A good writing coach will not directly edit your document, but provide clear guidance on how to prepare a manuscript for final editing. Whether you require assistance organizing and outlining your book concept, navigating the publishing process, or ongoing coaching, Queensland Self Publishing Services can help give you the confidence you need to succeed. Through our 3 packages of coaching programs, clients receive support clarifying their vision, goals, target readership, tone, proposed features and structure. The program includes self-study questionnaires, private consultation sessions, Online Learning Portal exercises, and brainstorming exercises to refine your book idea. In summary, our coaching services help you gain clarity, confidence and audience reach. We also assist with overcoming writer's block, defining the intended readership, developing your book's concept and overall content outline.

Book Coaching Package 2. The Works

This program is designed for aspiring writers who need more in-depth help in writing their book or want to be seen as an authority on their topic. This course teaches guidance and accountability in the form of weekly deadlines so that you stay focused and on track.

Regular weekly deadlines help authors establish a fully consistent writing routine that enables authors to effectively develop their narratives and bring creative works to completion. At specific intervals, actionable feedback is given so that you can improve your story as you write forward. This enables you to know what you're already doing well and what could use some improvement. Hence, you don't end up wasting years of your life writing a story that doesn’t have flow or that never gets fully completed due to procrastination or distractions.

Module 1
Time Management.
Effective time management and scheduling of writing sessions is critical to success as an author. This approach has helped a wide range of individuals from different backgrounds and occupations complete their books. Some of those who have benefited include busy entrepreneurs, solo parents with full-time employment, and individuals with demanding professions. One might assume that busy entrepreneurs have optimized time management strategies. However, many such entrepreneurs are highly creative individuals prone to distractions. One example such is pursuing new ideas as they arise. This makes dedicated and consistent writing sessions difficult for some people because they lose interest and move on to other projects before their book ever sees full completion.

Module 2.
Introduction to Book Templates.
This outline provides an efficient framework for getting started on a new book project. Templates for both fiction and nonfiction works are included, allowing the author to quickly populate the relevant structure and begin their first draft. Selecting the appropriate template and starting the first stages of the writing process teaches budding writers how to gain momentum during the first stages of the initial draft.

Module 3.
Establishing and Adhering to a Daily Writing Routine.
This module gives you practical guidelines and tips for getting your writing routine down pat. You learn to avoid distractions, maintain focus and how to eliminate writer's block.

Module 4.
Define Your Target Audience.
The intended audience for a book comprises those individuals most likely to purchase it. With the goal of maximizing book sales, an author would be well served to dedicate some effort towards discerning the key attributes of their intended readership. In this module, you'll learn how to find the demographic related to your book's genre and how to use keywords to find nice audiences and related material. This module also includes a brief exercise that helps authors distill the essential purpose and subject matter of what they are writing about.

Module 5.
The Structural Layout of Your Book.
Effective writing requires a solid firm structural foundation, just as buildings require stable foundations and the human body relies upon its skeletal system. For both fiction and non-fiction texts, establishing a clear structure is paramount before the meat of the writing begins. This module provides distinct guidance for organizing fiction versus non-fiction books. Authors will learn techniques for clarifying their topics and learn how to visually map them out in an outline. An illustrative example is included. Once the appropiate framework is in place, the writing process then naturally facilitates its flow smoothly, creating its first stage of momentum.

Module 6
Organize, Plan And Write your First Chapter.
This module provides a brief overview of sentence structure. Additionally, an example is provided to guide authors through building a chapter outline for their book. The process is demonstrated along with careful guidance as authors begin writing their first chapter.

Module 7
How to Write Compelling Introductions.
Now that you have gained the confidence to move forward, writing an introduction should be a snap right? In this final module, authors learn the basic techniques for crafting introductions for fiction and non-fiction books, and how to grab the reader's attention right from the outset.

For non-fiction texts, the author will learn how to clearly communicate the key benefits and takeaways for the target audience as well as techniques on how to craft a polished introduction that sets the right tone as well as how to conclude the introductory pages so they provide a natural transition into the ensuing chapters.

Module Coaching Course Overview
When you login to the Online Learning Portal at Queensland Self Publishing you will see a series of exercises to complete.  These writing sprints and exercises are a major component of the course module. You are given a timeline of 1 to 2 weeks to complete each module. Once each module is completed, the module is sent to us for review. A few days later we arrange a meeting via Zoom, Skype, Teams or phone to review each module and discuss your module.  This routine continues onto Module 7, whereupon you receive a graduation certificate, showing completion of the book coaching course. You can work on the exercises at your own pace and schedule appointments at your leisure. However we suggest up to 2 weeks to complete each module so Scott can schedule a Zoom, Skype or Team Session to review and evaluate your progress.
